Cetirizine hydrochloride is a second generationย antihistamine that reduces the natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine chemical can produce symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose.

Cetirizine HCL is used to treatment forย  cold or allergy symptoms. Such as sneezing, itching, watery eyes, or runny nose.

Cetirizine HCL is also used to treatment for an allergic reaction. This medicine use forย  itching and swelling cause by chronic urticaria (hives) and minimizes or eliminates the symptoms of perennial allergic rhinitis, seasonal allergic rhinitis, chronic idiopathic urticaria, allergic asthma, physical urticaria, and atopic dermatitis.

Class : ( Antihistamines & Antiallergics )

Mechanism of Action:

Cetirizine is a potent and highly selective antagonist of the peripheral histamine H1-receptor on effector cells in the GI tract, blood vessels and respiratory tract.

Absorption: Absorbed rapidly from the GI tract (oral); peak plasma concentrations after 1 hr. Rate, but not extent, of absorption altered by food.

Distribution: Enters breast milk; crosses the blood-brain barrier (insignificant amounts). Protein-binding: Highly bound.

Excretion: Via the urine (as unchanged); 10 hour (elimination half-life).

Indication & Dosage Oral:

Cetirizine hydrochloride tablet uses in Allergic conditions:

  • Adult: 10 mg once daily or 5 mg twice a day (bid).
  • Child: 6 mth-2 yr: 2.5 mg once daily (up to 2.5 mg bid in children =12 month) ; 2-5 yr: 5 mg once daily or 2.5 mg bid; >6 yr: 10 mg once daily or 5 mg bid.

How should I take cetirizine hydrochloride?

Take cetirizine HCL exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use cetirizine it in larger amounts or for longer than recommended.

You can take cetirizine with or without food.ย 

Before you swallow it chewable tablet must be chewed.

Oral doses: measure liquid medicine (oral solution) with a special dose-measuring spoon or cup. Not a regular table spoon. Ask your pharmacist for one if you do not have a dose-measuring device.

Warning:

Cetirizine hydrochloride can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. So be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert. Avoid drinking alcohol it can increase some of the side effects of cetirizine.

If you regularly use other medicines that make you sleepy (such as other cold or allergy medicine, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures, depression, or anxiety) then tell your doctor.

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity
  • lactation

Special Precautions:

  • Hepatic or renal impairment;
  • Elderly; tasks requiring mental alertness eg, driving or operating heavy machinery
  • Pregnancy

Adverse Drug Reactions:

  • Somnolence,
  • Insomnia,
  • Malaise,
  • Headache,
  • Dizziness;
  • GI discomfort,
  • Dry mouth,
  • Abdominal pain,
  • Diarrhoea,
  • Aausea,
  • Vomiting;
  • Occasional hypersensitivity;
  • Epistaxis,
  • Pharyngitis,
  • Bronchospasm

Drug Interactions:

  • Risk of increased INR (International normalized ratio) and epistaxis (nasal bleeding) when taken together with warfarin.
  • Potentially Fatal: CNS depressants and anticholinergics may potentiate CNS depression of cetirizine.

Storage:

  • Oral: Store at 20-25ยฐC.
  • Syrup: Can also refrigerate at 2-8ยฐC.

What happens if I miss a dose?

you can take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to take the medicine and skip the missed dose. Make up the missed dose do not take extra medicine or add extra doses.
